Railroad Medicare Beneficiaries
Medicare Does Not Cover Services on a Cruise Ship

Medicare does not pay for treatment in other countries or for treatment on board cruise ships.

In rare cases, Medicare may cover medically necessary health care services on a cruise ship if both of the following conditions are met.

  1. The doctor is allowed under certain laws to provide medical services on the cruise ship
  2. The ship is in a United States port or no more than six hours away from a U.S. port when you get the services, regardless of whether it is an emergency or not

If you believe both of the above conditions have been met please send your itemized statement and a completed Patient’s Request for Medicare Payment (PDF, 234 KB) form to:

If you have questions about your Railroad Medicare Part B claim, you can call our toll-free Customer Service Line at (800) 833-4455, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. for all time zones with the exception of PST, which receives service from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For the hearing impaired, call TTY/TDD at (877) 566-3572. This line is for the hearing impaired with the appropriate dial-up service and is available during the same hours Customer Service Representatives are available.
